About the Department

Department of German Language and Literature was founded in 1996 as a part of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka. The study programme is offered as a double major and can be combined with all other double major study programmes offered at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences:

  • English Language and Literature

  • Croatian Language and Literature

  • Philosophy

  • Computer Science

  • Pedagogy

  • History

  • Art History

  • Italian Language and Literature

The curriculum covers various areas of linguistics and literature, and the applied part of the study programme includes productive language skills and the exploration of culture and civilisation of the German-speaking world.

THE BOLOGNA PROCESS

In accordance with the principles of the Bologna Process, the Department of German Language and Literature offers two cycles of higher education study programmes: undergraduate study level (6 semesters) and graduate study level (4 semesters).

At both levels, in addition to the core courses, the Department offers a number of elective courses. All the courses are one-semester long and differ in the number of ECTS.

Courses are held entirely in German, which contributes to the continuous development of the students’ language competences. Some of the courses are taught by native speakers.
