The Israeli Ambassador Shows his Support for the Strengthening of the Holocaust Education at the Department of History

The Ambassador of the State of Israel, His Excellency Ilan Mor, visited the Department of History at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Rijeka on Thursday, 21 April 2022.
The Ambassador’s visit was motivated by the introduction of four new courses related to the history of the Holocaust at the Department of History. The courses were introduced through the framework of the Claims Conference University Partnership Program, international cooperation that positioned the University of Rijeka in a group of elite universities conducting such educational programs dedicated to the history of the Holocaust. Furthermore, the introduction of the new courses has positioned the Department of History as the only one in Croatia which offers systematic education on the Holocaust on both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Ambassador Mor met with the Madam Rector of the University of Rijeka, Full Professor Snježana Prijić-Samaržija, Ph.D., the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Associate Professor Aleksandar Mijatović, Ph.D., Vice Dean for Science and International Cooperation, Full Professor Luca Malatesti, Ph.D., the Head of the Department of History, Assistant Professor Maja Ćutić Gorup, Ph.D., and the project coordinator and visiting lecturer Lovro Kralj. After presenting the results of the implementation of Holocaust education at the University of Rijeka, Ambassador Mor expressed his wholehearted support for the efforts and the ambition to secure the longevity and expand the research and education infrastructure related to the history of the Holocaust at the University of Rijeka.
During his visit, Ambassador Mor gave a lecture to the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences students titled “Universal Lessons from the Holocaust,” in which he emphasized the importance of Holocaust education in the 21st century. The Ambassador also met with the students who took the newly introduced courses related to the history of the Holocaust, antisemitism, and fascism. During the conversation, students emphasized their interest in, and the importance of, lessons from the Holocaust for them as future educators.
Representatives of the University, Faculty and the History Department emphasized the importance of maintaining and strengthening Holocaust education both on the local and national levels. Coordinator of the Claims Conference University Partnership Program, Lovro Kralj, pointed out that there are still many challenges ahead in order to integrate the Holocaust education into the Croatian institutions of higher education across the country while also emphasizing the commitment to establish further research and education infrastructure through international cooperation, projects and partnerships. Madam Rector Snježana Prijić-Samaržija announced that the University of Rijeka endorsed such initiatives and underlined the ambition of the University of Rijeka to establish itself as a center for Holocaust education and research on a national and regional level.
