About the Department

As an academic field, Cultural Studies emerged in the middle of 20^thcentury with the aim of studying the totality of manifest forms of culture, with an emphasis on those neglected and placed in the margins of the usual academic focus (popular culture and working class culture, gender studies, etc.). Cultural studies have been developingthroughcontacts with various humanistic disciplines and expanding in the direction of both theoretical research and practical application.

Today, Cultural Studies are taught at renowned universities worldwide and represent the impetus of interdisciplinarity and critical spirit of the academic world, imminent in the transformational processes of the academic establishment. The Department of Cultural Studies was founded in 2004, thus becoming the first study of such kind in Croatia.What distinguishes Cultural Studies from other clearly bounded academic disciplines is the ability of crossing the boundaries by applying critical and often antidisciplinary approach in order to actively engage in the broad areas of culture.

Cultural Studies in Rijeka represent a theoretical amalgam derived from specific knowledge and insights from the fields of anthropology, film and media studies, cultural history, sociology and literary theory, which the students acquire at the undergraduate level. At the graduate level, the students can choose to specialise in one of the modules offered: mediology and interdisciplinary cultural theory. Currently, a third graduate module is being developed, which is to focus on the issues of Central Europe, the Mediterranean and the Balkans.
