About the Department

The Department of History of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Rijeka, was founded in 1998 as a double degree study with free study course combination. The Department performs scientific, scholarly and specialized work in the Humanities, History area. The Department offers three study programs: a three-year Undergraduate study in History (BA), a two-year Graduate study program in History Education (MA) and a two-year Graduate study program in History and Heritage Interpretation (MA).The Departmental faculty are also working on several scientific projects, whether as project leaders or as collaborators. During an academic year the Department organizes several congresses and guest lectures of Croatian and foreign academics. The Department cooperates with numerous Croatian and international research institutes. The Department established two Chairs, one for Pre-Modern History (Chair head: Kosana Jovanović) and the other for Modern and Contemporary History (Chair head: Darko Dukovski).

Since 2006 the Department has been publishing a peer-reviewed journal, the West Croatian History Journal.  The students of the Department had their own organization „Malleus“ from 2006 till 2017, and in 2018 they formed a new student organization, Draco Tarsaticum.
