About the Department

The Department of Art History was founded in May 2003, having evolved out of the Section of Theoretical Subjects and Art History of the School of Art. The Department offers undergraduate and graduate study programmes in art history, educating professionals in the fields of scholarly research, protection of cultural heritage, museology, art theory, as well as professors of Art History. The study programmes promote a long tradition of studying visual arts, contemporary research methodologies, interdisciplinarity, openness and compatibility with similar studies in Croatia and abroad. The Department fosters international cooperation with renowned scientists, experts and relevant institutions. Lectures and workshops by guest lecturers are frequently organised. In addition, the members of the Department are head researchers on several research projects.

The Centre for Iconographic Studies, which brings together the scientists from all over the world, also operates within the Department. The Centre annually publishes IKON – Journal of Iconographic Studies and organises the annual international conference on iconographic studies.

Twice a year, the Department organizes conferences called Theoretical Dialogues and Dialogues with Heritage, in cooperation with other departments of the faculty, as well as other university centres in Croatia and the region. Books of abstracts are available at: http://issuu.com/puffri

In 2010, “SPUM” – the association of Art History students was founded, with the aim of organising excursions, collaborating with museums and participating in projects in collaboration with the teachers of the Department.
