About the Department

Today’s Department of Pedagogy has its roots in the rich tradition of pedagogical activities developed in Rijeka and its surrounding region. The tradition of teacher training schools in Kastav, Rijeka and Gospić, was particularly relevant for the development of the Department. The Department of pedagogy in Rijeka based its development on industrial pedagogy and the development of professional education.

1953 – 1962 Pedagogy and Higher Vocational Schoolof Pedagogy (VSPŠ)

In 1955, within the Higher Vocational Schoolof Pedagogy, began the development of the Centre of Pedagogy that focused on the field of vocational education. Since 1956, the Centre had operated as an independent unit under the management of the Institute for the advancement of vocational education in Croatia.

1962 – 1972 Pedagogy and Higher School of Industrial Pedagogy (VIPŠ)

With the aim of training pedagogical and organisational personnel for vocational education, Department of Industrial Pedagogy was established as a part of the Higher School of Industrial Pedagogy.

The Department of Industrial Pedagogy offered training for four specialist profiles: educational institution administrator, education programme developer, teaching organiser and educational counselor. Within the Department, supplementary teacher training programmes were organised for those who did not have teaching qualifications.

In 1962, the Department of Industrial Pedagogy was established and has achieved outstanding results in the field of scientific research, lifelong education, publishing activities and generally, in improving the quality of the teaching process.

Along with the Department of Industrial Pedagogy, at the end of the ac. year 1962/63 an independent scientific research unit was established – the Experimental Centre of Industrial Training – with the main goal of working on the improvement of the teaching processes and the development of teaching resources.

1972 – 1978 Pedagogy and the Faculty of Industrial Pedagogy (FIP)

The Faculty of Industrial Pedagogy became a specialised faculty that offered graduate and postgraduate study programmes. One of the eight constituent sections was the Section of Industrial Pedagogy (from ac. year 1972/73 to 1977/78).

The Section of Industrial Pedagogy was the research unit of the Faculty, and in the in the ac. year 1972/1973 it developed into the Institute of Industrial Pedagogy. With the establishment of the University of Rijeka in 1973, the University Centre forTeacher Training and Research was established as well.

Pedagogy at the Academies of Pedagogy

Academies of Pedagogy in Rijeka, Pula and Gospić have greatly contributed to the development of pedagogical theory and pedagogical practices. In those institutions, the pedagogical group of subjects was an integral part of teacher education. The first Academy of Pedagogy in Croatia was founded in Rijeka in 1960.

1977 – 1998 Pedagogy and the Faculty of Pedagogy in Rijeka (PFR)

The study of pedagogy at the Faculty of Pedagogy was performed by the Institute of Pedagogy. In this period, the Institute conducted study programmes for pre-school teachers and primary school teachers, in both Rijeka and Gospić.

Pedagogy at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka (FFR)

On February 27^th 1998, the Faculty of Pedagogy changed its name to Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka. The Department of Pedagogy now offers undergraduate and graduate study programmes in pedagogy, both as single major and double major studies.
